About Liath Hollins - Harpist

Liath Hollins is a traditional harpist based in the East Midlands of England. She is an experienced professional musician and her harp music has been a part of many special occasions.

Liath was born into a musical family, and has played many instruments over the years. She has had a lifelong fascination with the harp, though she came to playing the instrument relatively late. After teaching herself for a short while, she studied with traditional harpist Jean Hudson. She is now an experienced professional harpist with a large client base. She is in demand for weddings and other special occasions and has played at events throughout the United Kingdom.

Although rooted in the traditional music of Britain and Ireland, Liath loves experimenting with other genres including blues, rock and even metal. She also has a large repertoire of classical and pop music which is very popular with clients choosing wedding music.

Liath Hollins - Harpist - Additional Information

Below are some choices for wedding music along with advice about the type of music that is appropriate for each part of the ceremony. These are only suggestions - you are welcome to pick anything you like from the full repertoire list or even to request a piece that does not appear.

If you are having a civil wedding ceremony, do remember that religious music of any kind is not permitted. If in doubt, check with your registrar.

Prelude
The best choices here are relaxing and not too demanding on the ear - your guests will be arriving and this will help set them at ease and create the right atmosphere before the ceremony begins. Typically, you will need to choose around six pieces of music. Ideally, the last piece needs to be in the same key as the processional piece - this makes for a smooth transition as the bride enters.

• Braes of Locheil (Traditional)
• Eilean Aigais (The Isle of Aigas) (Traditional)
• Fagail Liosmore (Traditional)
• Jamie Come Try Me (Burns)
• Laoidh An Iasgair (Fisherman's Prayer) (Traditional)
• My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose (Burns)
• Bonny Sweet Robin (Anon, 15th century)
• Clair De Lune (Debussy)
• Fur Elise (Beethoven)
• Gymnopedie No 1 (Satie)
• Fields of Gold (Sting)
• Lady (Lionel Richie)
• Titanic Theme (Celene Dion)
• Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers)

Processional
The bride should feel comfortable walking to the pace of the processional piece. Choose tunes with a steady rhythm or stately marching pace. Unless you are absolutely set upon it, something modern would not be recommended – pop music goes out of fashion quickly and it’s better to choose a piece that will stand the test of time in your memory.

• Bridal Chorus (Wagner - the traditional wedding march)
• Canon in D (Pachelbel)
• Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach) *
• Jupiter Theme (Holst)**
• Moonlight Sonata – First Movement (Beethoven)
• An Honest Man (Traditional)
• St Kilda Wedding March (Traditional)

Signing of the Register
Pick something gentle but cheerful here. You will usually need two or three pieces to cover the signing and photographs. There are usually only a few seconds in between the ending of the register signing and the recessional which means that ideally, the final piece should be in the same key as the recessional piece.

• Dance of the Blessed Spirits (Gluck)
• St Anthony Chorale (Haydn)*
• Sheep May Safely Graze (Bach)
• Closest Thing to Crazy (Katie Melua)
• Endless Love (Lionel Richie)
• Wind Beneath my Wings (Bette Midler)
• Inis Siar (McNulty)
• Loch Tay Boat Song (Traditional)
• Sweetness of Mary (Traditional)

Recessional
The final part of the ceremony and the most joyous. Choose something upbeat to celebrate your first steps together as a married couple.

• A Leita Vita (Gastoldi)
• Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Handel)
• Trumpet Tune (Purcell)
• Margaret's Waltz (Traditional)
• Miss Margaret Graham of Gartmore's Favourite (Marshall)
• Wild Ducks Nest (Traditional)
• Y Dydd (Traditional)

* Not suitable for civil wedding ceremonies.
** Best to double check with the registrar regarding civil ceremonies, as this is also used as a hymn tune.

Sarah Davis, Wedding
Hi Tracey, Thank you very much! We had a great day and please don't worry about the payment, it wasn't a problem at all. Unfortunately I didn't hear much of Liath's performance as I was having photos taken, but she was extremely professional and her performance was very fitting with the venue and the event. It was a pleasure to have her there and many people commented on how well the music complimented the wedding. I'm sorry not to be able to give you more detailed feedback! Many thanks again for getting in touch with Liath for us, and for your efficient service.

Mr & Mrs H.
Just a short line to say how much we all enjoyed your music last Saturday - your choice was delightful, and there was definitely something for everyone's taste. Many thanks, and we hope to have an opportunity of hearing you again in the future.

Mr T.
Thank you very much for your wonderful playing at our civil ceremony - it really helped to make the day. Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed the music. Indeed, I think you may have gained some new harp music fans - many said they had not heard it before.

Mrs F.
Thank you so much for playing at my mother’s party, the hotel were so impressed by your playing and said that they would recommend you as often as they could. Once again, thank you from all of us.

Mr and Mrs S.
...thank you for the glorious part you played in our wedding day. The later in life you leave these things, the higher the mountain is to climb - but Saturday was just a little piece of Paradise - and, again, thank you for your strummings.

Mr & Mrs M.
Once again, thank you so much for your contribution on Saturday and for helping the day become very special. Had loads of positive feedback on your performance... Thanks again and we would most definitely recommend you to anyone taking the wedding plunge in the future.
